2017 Wingham Silver Stick Regionals
There are many common sports related terms that coaches and parents use when addressing their young players prior to a game. Skate hard, leave it all on the ice, give it 110%, have fun and enjoy the moment.   As the Shelburne Wolves Atom Rep team entered this past week's 2017 Silver Stick Tournament in Wingham,  this excited group of 13 players were ready to put all of these terms on full display for fans and opponents alike.

After coming up one goal short of beating the BCH Ice Dogs in the opening game of the tournament, the Wolves next opponent was a stubborn and talented team from Kincardine.  In the early stages of this entertaining game, the Wolves fell behind early and were forced to play catch-up.  However, like they've done all season long, this Atom Rep Team refused to give up. Playing before a rowdy crowd in the Wingham Arena, the Wolves would eventually tie the game up at three in the final period.  Unfortunately, with overtime looming, Kincardine would score a late goal and go on to win 4-3.  Even with the Wolves losing the first two games, their goals for and goals against differential was -2. This impressive stat cemented the Wolves as the sixth seed heading into this past weekend's Wingham Silver Stick Regional Finals.

Now the WOLVES had to face a win or go home scenario against an undefeated team from Saugeen Shores. Playing this crucial game in the tight confines of the Blyth Arena, the testy team from Saugeen Shores quickly jumped ahead 3-1 in the early stages of this back and forth game.   As much as this was once again a concerning situation to the Shelburne Wolves players, bench staff, and fans, another big comeback just seemed inevitable to anyone who knew this team.  After closing the gap within one by a dazzling goal from Mason Burke, the Wolves found themselves running out of time. Needing a goal to tie, the Wolves threw everything they had at the Saugeen net. Then, with just 45 seconds to go, they were finally rewarded with the tying goal and a trip to overtime.

With the fans from both teams on the edge of their seats, the puck dropped on the Wolves first OT of the season. Unfortunately, after almost scoring the winning goal at one end, the Saugeen Shores team went back up the ice and scored the decisive goal to win the game, and sadly ending the 2017 Silver Stick Tournament for the Shelburne Wolves Atom Rep Team.

As tough as these one goal losses were for the Wolves this past week, this team proved to everyone that regardless of the score, they will never give up. What a tremendous learning experience this tournament has been for the Atom Rep Wolves and now they look forward to the remainder of this season. The team is back at home in the Wolf Den this Tuesday evening where they will be facing a tough team from Creemore.  Thank-you for reading and thank-you to all of our fans who traveled all the way to Wingham and Blyth to cheer us on!

GO WOLVES GO!!
